Suitcase. Sardinia, Italy - Travel Guide

Saturday morning, pre-birthday week, the girls and I were up at dawn. Time for a long weekend getaway. Footloose and fancy free we set off in search of golden sands and crystal waters. Our destination? Sardinia.

We stayed in the prettiest of resorts in Villasimius - Pullman's Timi Ama. It overlooks the lake and the beach of Porto Giunco - the ideal spot for water lovers.

A little jewel nestled in the south-eastern corner of Sardinia, the bright blues of the ocean here simply dance before your eyes, changing to shimmering turquoise then deep blue in a blink.

The green hillsides seem to sway in the breeze, their trees dancing around Spanish-style villas that peek out, whilst yachts bob in the bay and little Fiats race along the winding coastal roads.

For these snap-happy friends it was too good to resist.

After an afternoon of sun, sand and sea, we returned to our rooms feeling well-ensconced in our resort home. Not to mention thoroughly sated by the extensive buffet. The seafood here really is fabulous.

As the second day dawned, we took a boat out to cruise the coastline and pop some birthday champagne. I spent a good hour simply staring in wonder at the incredible azure blues of the ocean. Can you blame me? Just look at that. It's electric.

In we dived, bracing against the chill and giggling with full hearts as we did so. There's nothing like a dip in the great big blue to recharge the soul.

This particular part of the island is home to some incredible beaches. My favourites were Porto Giunco, Punta Molentis, Cala Sinzias (stop here for lunch, there is an amazing beach restaurant), Cala Pira (like something straight out of your beach dreams), and Porto Sa Ruxi.

Honestly pick any of them and you can't go wrong but I say you should try and visit them all. If not by boat, then by car. Most you can easily access although for some a bit of trekking is required but just think of the tan you'll get while doing it.

By sunset we dragged our sun-kissed selves home to refresh then it was off for a delightful bite of dinner at Santa Maria, renowned for its seafood and pizzas. Of course we tried both, before returning home to fall into the kind of deep slumber one can only achieve after spending the day at sea.

Morning, and we were woken to the sound of the waves. A stop at the hotel spa had us feeling refreshed and renewed before breakfast. I must say the Hammam here is particularly lovely.

Then, as the dedicated tanners that we are, we headed back for the beach to perfect our mermaid skills. Hair flick? Check.

The rest of the day went by in a blur of sunshine and sea breezes. What with singing road trips, multiple gelatos and Cagliari explorations - just like they say, time flies when you're having fun!

You'll be pleased to hear my Italian is coming along nicely ahead of my 4-week summer adventure. I've got ordering food and cocktails covered. That's all that matters right!?

If you have the chance to make a trip to this incredible Italian island be sure to stay at Pullman Timi Ama. You can book here.
